New home construction jumps in February Roberto The Commerce Department announced Tuesday that housing starts rose 22 percent in February, compared to January. This unexpected surge is the first increase in housing starts since June.
The Northeast showed particularly favorable results, with housing starts rising an amazing 89 percent.
In addition, applications for building permits, an indicator of future construction activity, rose 3 percent month-over-month.
